The Elastic Space
Peter Viltoft
Space is not static, but dynamic, shaped by our own behaviour and movement through the continuous passage of time—this is the premise of the book: space is always experienced within a temporal perspective.
The book outlines a spatial model that, in five overall stages (levels of experience), describes the spaces around us as both immediate and remembered experiences.
Or, put differently, it explores how spaces encounter other spaces and ourselves within dynamic relationships—how spatial identity and a sense of place come into being.
The discussion draws on examples from architecture, the author's own homes from a lifetime in architectural practice, as well as cities and buildings, nature and landscapes, with excursions into music and literature.
